Show #85: And now for something completely different!

The Startup Success Podcast

We break format for this show – to put it mildly. This is a (unexpected) recording of a conversation Patrick and Bob had after Pat’s return from the Business of Software Conference this year. You may find it interesting, you may hate it. But Pat strongly wants to include you in this conversation, and I’m going along with that. Let us know what you think.

Tired of being stuck in neutral in your startup? Why not do a MicroConsult with Bob Walsh? Instead of hypotheticals and too much information, Bob will work with you for an hour via Skype developing 8 to 10 specific todos that will get your startup in gear. Details at 47hats.com.

And a quick word about our sponsor, InfluAds. If your startup’s market is other startups, web developers and designers why not reach out to them through with a small, tasteful ad at sites they already read? That’s how InfulAds works. Act now, mention “SSP” and save 20% on you first ad buy. InfluAds.com – ads for startups by a Startup.

  1. Mmmm, stories. Could be a meme going round (q.v. http://thisdeveloperslife.com ). Plenty of stories to go round, I’d say.

Regarding the “format”, I thought it was interesting to hear how very similar you guys are in conversation compared to consciously podcasting. A little more “gushy”, perhaps, but that – as intimated at the start – made it more compelling.

  2. Hey, thanks for the link, Mike!

… and REALLY? That’s very interesting feedback. I usually feel so stiff. Huh. I guess I won’t worry about that too much.

I was really energized by meeting people who cared about these things at the conference … the mission now is to focus that energy on producing a better show and sharing/uncovering/amplifying great stories as well as we can.

Thanks again for the feedback – keep it coming.

  3. Corey says:

This was an amazing episode. Pure, honest, pure ****ing enthusiasm. We need more of that.

A while ago you were trying to squeeze ideas for products out of the people you were interviewing. Meanwhile you came up with one of your own, based on your own passion.

Patrick – I knew you lived in the midwest and worked for Microsoft. That’s it. Suddenly I heard your accent (it comes out when you’re excited!), I had no idea you were a musician! and basically I got to know you a lot better.

I like this more personal approach to the show. I’m not advocating it be the format all the time, but I hope you integrate some of the elements of it.

  4. Thanks, Corey! No, we won’t do that every week, but I am going to try to loosen up a bit and cut to the point a bit quicker. One thing I’m learning is that EVERYBODY has an interesting story … as interviewers, we just have to get them to tell that story (ideally in a way that’s compelling, useful, and reasonably efficient).

Also, I finally realized that I think of more ideas than I can use, so I’m starting to post them to my blog at http://patrickfoley.com/tag/Idea/

    Cheers!

    P

  5. This is a really great podcast. Fun and inspiring. It’s all about storytelling, I guess. Keep it going, thank you for this and for many other in your series – like the one on touch interfaces was great too.
